Essential Defenders, Vol. 5 Reviews
Collecting the first 14 issues of DeMatteis' run and a handful of other tie-in issues. The only time I ever picked up The Defenders during their original run was from this period, and even then it was a handful of issues. Odder still, I was a big Hulk fan (still am), and yet he was gradually being pushed out of the title (maybe thats why I only picked up a handful). Namor even moreso. And the Valkyrie seemed mostly side-lined in these issues. DeMatteis seemed to be getting a kick out of all things supernatural. Sure, that element had popped up in the title before, but it was amped up here. I mean they wind up fighting Satan in their big 100th issue. Throw in some guest appearances by the Man-Thing (snicker) and Ghost Rider, as well as adding to the non-team the likes of Daimon Hellstrom (the son of the aforementioned Satan) and Devil-Slayer. It wasn't enough that Doctor Strange was already on the team. Lets throw two more magic users on the roster.I'm not complaining, actually. Hellstrom basically replaced Namor in the Cocky Arrogant SOB Department, and Devil-Slayer actually wound up becoming my favorite Obscure Marvel Character - a Vietnam vet with anger management problems, and a magical cape that could transport him anywhere on Earth and provide him with huge honking battle-axes with which to cut demons into itty bitty pieces.
I read these comics way back when I was a kid. The Defenders are an iconic comic team. Great read and an important part of the Marvel comics mythos. Very recommended
