Easy read and understanding of the life of Melungeon people.I read this book because my cousins and I have tried to learn who our great grandfather was and where he came from. All we were ever heard was that he never talked about it. He would write a sister in VS , but that is all anyone of his children new. When I heard about the Melungeons and read about them it fit his personality and all we ever heard of him. I don't know what He was like before my great grandmother died. He was faithful to take care his children who were still home after she died. However he would go to work come home eat and read his Bible. Didn't talk very quite. This is why I chose to read the book to get insight into why he acted the way he did. Although we were told he was Indian, I'm not sure he was because it didn't show up in my Dad's DNA. However there were a lot the Melungeon ancestry in it. This book helped me to understand why he never talked about his past life in VA or his family back there. I now believe he did what he thought he had to do to protect his family and their future. Thanks Tanya Shook for sharing your grandmother's story. I have a whole new appreciation for what my grandfather and his family did and sacrificed for me. Your book really was an eye opener and a blessing to me. I may never know anything about him as he seemed to have covered his tracks very well, but I feel a peace in my heart because I have a better understanding of him.
